You can handle this a few different ways - you can say it changes to a food/drink requirement, or you can make it require a certain somewhat difficult to obtain compound like insulin. Chances are high the Empire wouldn't be especially interested in maintaining it if it costs them too much money and would just let them die so getting rescued promptly is probably a good idea.
